(Feb 15, 08) In the spring of 2008, McFarland will publish the inaugural issue of Black Ball: A Journal of the Negro Leagues, a semiannual peer-reviewed journal. Under the guidance of Leslie Heaphy and an editorial board of leading historians, the journal will offer new, authoritative research on all subjects related to black baseball, including the Negro major and minor leagues, teams, and players; pre–Negro League organization and play; barnstorming; segregation and integration; class, gender, and ethnicity; the business of black baseball; and the arts. (May 12, 06) Jenny Henderson, author of The North Carolina Filmography, has donated her files and collection to the New Hanover County Public Library, in Wilmington, North Carolina. The collection covers studio films, documentaries, independent films, newsreels, student films, and television series. The criterion for inclusion is that any part of the film, no matter how short, was made in North Carolina. The files are available for researchers upon request in the North Carolina Room of the New Hanover County Public Library, in downtown Wilmington, North Carolina. You can also write to McFarland at Lori Tedder to request a copy. (Oct 31, 05) The oldest living member of the Hall of Fame, Al Lopez, passed away this weekend in Tampa at the age of 97. Much more than a catcher and manager, he opened up baseball to individuals of Spanish, Cuban and Italian ancestry at a time when social barriers had just begun to recede. Wes Singletary, a Tampa native now living in Tallahassee, wrote Lopez's biography in 1999. The book is based, first, on the recollections of the man himself, and former players, family, and fans, and also on newspaper and periodical accounts, and archival resources.
